Fad diets

Fad diets are diets that promise to bring instant weight loss. They are not the ideal diet and aren't balanced and the best way to lose any weight. Many of these diets can affect your health, cause physical discomfort (abdominal discomfort and flatulence). A big disappointment follows when you regain weight soon after you lose it.

How long should fad diets be taken?

Don't do a crash diet for more than 3 to 7 days. Most of these diets are not meant to be kept for extended periods of time. They aren't balanced and not meant to be your permanent way of eating.

Why are crash diets harmful?

Harm is done by overemphasis on one particular food or type of food, which violates the first principle of good nutrition: Diet should be balanced and include a variety of foods. If you are able to stay on such a diet for more than a few weeks, you may develop nutritional deficiencies, because no one type of food has all the nutrients you need for good health.

In what other ways are quick-weight-loss diets flawed?

Fad diets don’t encourage physical activity and require drastic changes in eating patterns. For this reason you can't stay on them for long. Most fad diets have not been documented to be safe in the long term.
